Why Support Us
- WLT-US takes direct action to purchase and protect threatened habitats. We don’t spend money on lobbying or advocacy. We buy real acres in real places and protect them forever.
- WLT-US is committed to maximizing the benefit of all donations. 96% of all donations received are spent directly on conservation projects. For each $100 you contribute $96 goes to purchase and protect threatened habitats.
- We maximise your donation: in many cases we are able to leverage match funding from other sources which significantly increases the value of your donation.
- WLT-US low administrative overheads - just 4% on your donation - is made possible by:
- maintaining a small and highly experienced staff in the US – four people, with collectively over 80 years of field conservation experience and a very small support staff
- working in close collaboration with local, in-country conservation organizations that own and manage the land. This approach has proven successful over the past twenty years. It not only ensures the perpetual protection of the land, but builds local capacity, engages government and community support, and provides benefit to local communities, all of which results in unusually high levels of local support for conservation and protected areas.
- Our staff have all started from the grassroots – both living in the tropics and having directly implement projects in the field so we understand the difficulties of land acquisition and protected area management, and know how to avoid waste and mistakes to optimize our efficiency.
- WLT-US takes a strategic approach to land protection. Our focus on direct conservation action, and our established network of dedicated local conservation organizations, allows us to identify key areas under imminent threat, often representing the critical remaining ranges of endangered species, and to move swiftly to purchase and protect these disappearing biodiversity treasures before they are lost forever. Often relatively small but highly strategic conservation land purchases form the core for larger protected areas that are established around these first protected core habitats.
